1. Mahurat – The Very First Thing!

In Hindu Weddings, the date and the time of the marriage ceremony has a very crucial role. For any event to take place, an astrologer predicts the auspicious date and time for the event to be successful and pious. The Mahurat is set by using the couple’s date or birth and time of birth!

2. The Roka Ceremony

This is the first official announcement about the couple, in a Hindu Wedding. Both the families get together and bless the couple. Roka (as in Hindi) means stop; it denotes that the families have stopped looking for any other groom/bride for their child and that they are finalizing the this very relationship! Roka ceremony is mostly very intimate and is done within the families only.

3. Mehendi Ceremony

As the wedding functions start, mehendi ceremony is the first one to take place. The mehendi ceremony takes place one day before the wedding, mostly in the day time. This is the function where the bride along with her friends and relatives apply henna on their hands. It is said that the darker the henna stains are, the stronger the bond of the partners is going to be!

4. Sangeet – Let’s Go!

The Sangeet night is the most happening event of all, in the entire wedding. It is the event where bride’s and groom’s side come together and dance their heart out. Traditionally, Sangeet ceremony was held with all the ladies getting together of both the sides to sing and dance along. Now, the Sangeet ceremony was evolved into a grand and exquisite function altogether!

5. Tilak Ceremony

The Tilak ceremony is the first step to establish a strong bond between the families and is said to be auspicious. In this, all the males of both the families get together at the groom’s residence and the male members of the bride’s side put Tilak (Vermilion) on the groom’s forehead. Along with that, the groom’s father sends sugar, coconut, rice, clothes, henna and jewellery as Shagun for the bride’s family.

6. Haldi– Go Yellow!

Haldi ceremony takes place in the morning of the day of the wedding. In this, everyone applies a mixture of turmeric, oil and water to the couple’s skin and clothes. This mixture is believed to make the skin glow and at the time of wedding you will look radiant!

Traditionally, the bride was to be applied the haldi mixture that came from the groom’s side and both of them were to be applied haldi separately but these days, the haldi ceremony takes place together at the same place itself!

7. Var Yaatra or Baraat

This is the time when the wedding day festivities begins! The groom’s arrival with his family and relatives is called Var Yaatra or Arrival of Baraat! The whole groom’s side dance their way to the bride’s place to commence the wedding!

8. Milni – Meet The Other side

This takes place after the baraat has arrived. The meeting of both the sides of the families, especially the parents is called Milni. Gifts and garlands are exchanged at this point and sweets are shared to celebrate the wedding day!

9. Welcome of The Groom & The Deals

Now is the time to welcome the groom. The mother of the bride does the Aarti and asks the groom to enter in, but not so easily! The friends and sisters of the bride don’t let the groom to enter without paying the toll. This is the time for some fun and games, and some side money too 😉

10. Bride’s Entry – Welcome the Queen

12. Kanyadaan

This is one of the most emotional moments of the entire wedding where the parents have to do the kanyadaan of their daughter. It symbolizes that the daughter (considered as Goddess Laxmi) is being given to the groom (considered as Lord Vishnu) for a lifetime union and love!

13. Pheras, Mangalsutra & Sindoor

After the kanyadaan, the 7-pheras take place in which, with each phera the couple make a promise to each other for life. Then the groom makes the bride wear the mangalsutra and applies sindoor to her forehead – denoting that they are married!

14. Joota Chhupai

this very ritual is yet another fun game between the bride’s sisters & brides vs the groom. During the whole wedding ceremony, the bride’s side put all their tactics to steal the shoes of the groom so that they could get some more money from him because he cannot do anything without shoes and he will have to pay to get them back!

15. Vidaai

Once all the rituals are over, now is the time for the most emotional moment – The Vidaai. This is where the bride bids adieu to her side of the family and get along with her partner to begin the new chapter of life. This particular custom symbolizes gratitude towards her parents. The bride throws rice towards the back five-times as she walks out, leaving a token for the other family members to collect!
