The significance of Sindoor is portrayed in a lot many stories but one that is prevalent is that Lord Shiva asked Mata Parvati to sacrifice the third eye that she had, which was on her forehead. Maa Parvati agreed to it in order to marry Lord Shiva. On their wedding day, as Lord Shiva removed her third eye, she started bleeding from her forehead. And from that day, this area became the place, where married women apply Sindoor. The sindoor is a visual indicator of the marital status of a woman!

It is also said that Sindoor is the symbol of fertility. It is believed that sindoor consists of mercury, which was used in the ancient days to stimulate the reproductive organs and to boost fertility. In ancient times, Sindoor was applied from the forehead to the point of the pituitary gland in order to regulate most of the bodily functions and boost well-being by stimulating the hormone-secreting glands.
